There are countless reasons passengers choose to see Alaska by plane, but the crowd favorite tends to be the breathtaking natural beauty this incredible state provides. The landscapes are dazzling, to be sure, and your helicopter ride will offer views like nothing you’ve ever seen.

Flight-seeing in Anchorage Alaska is Spectacular

But if you’re an animal lover, you’ll definitely want to consider flight-seeing Anchorage or elsewhere in the state. That’s because the Last Frontier has an astounding number of creatures to see. If you’re lucky, you might see some of them emerge during helicopter tours. Here are five amazing animals you may catch a glimpse of when flight-seeing Alaska or when taking in another of our state’s unparalleled outdoor experiences.

Black and Brown Bears: It’s estimated that 100,000 black bears live throughout the state, with thousands more brown bears (also known as grizzly bears) dwelling in different Alaskan regions. Many of these animals live in fairly inaccessible places, which is why you may want to consider flight-seeing Anchorage if you have your heart set on seeing some. If you happen upon these bear populations on a ride or tour, you may see some bears playing, eating, fishing, or resting. Just make sure you stick with the professionals to ensure your safety.

Bald Eagles: Our national bird is particularly abundant here in Alaska. In fact, there are more bald eagles here than in any other place throughout the country, with approximately 30,000 making Alaska their home. Bald eagles aren’t the only birds you’ll see soaring in the skies, however. There are also golden eagles, falcons, magpies, jays, and more. Along the shore, you may also see puffins and sandpipers. Of course, the sight of a bald eagle is one of the most unparalleled. While it’s not guaranteed you’ll spot one while flight-seeing Anchorage, there’s a fairly good chance you could observe one during the course of your trip.

Caribou and Moose: Massive moose and impressive caribou can be found throughout the state, even in populated areas. More than 900,000 caribou roam in 32 different herds across Alaska’s tundra landscapes, but moose often find their way into yards and even onto school soccer fields. Although locals may not always be thrilled to see one of their trees destroyed by the voracious appetite of a moose, these creatures are certainly a sight to see — and you may not find them in many other places throughout the nation.

Foxes and Wolves: Alaska is home to an estimated 7,000 to 11,000 wolves, which might be enough to make some visitors nervous. But their packs typically stay within the state’s parks, so they don’t present a threat to tourists. You may not see them sitting on a glacier during your helicopter trip, but venturing to a nearby park area might allow you to spot some. Wolverines, arctic and red foxes, lynx, coyotes, and other creatures are also very plentiful here. Keep a sharp eye and you might just see some slinking through the grass.

Marine Mammals: When flightseeing anchorage, you can’t forget about all the astounding animals that make their homes in or near the water. There are several species of whales (including blue, bowhead, beluga, humpback, fin, minke, and gray whales) that spend a lot of time here. There are also sea otters, seals, sea lions, walrus, and tons of fish and other sea creatures that have made Alaska their home. Although not all of these creatures will be in plain sight or viewable from the air at a great distance, it’s possible to get a close-up view — and it’s always magical just to know they’re near.

There’s nothing more captivating than the creatures both large and small that Alaska has to offer. To learn more about taking in the unique sights of this state and getting a bird’s eye view of it all through one of our helicopter tours, contact us today.
